What To Report
 

The following is a list of types of weather observations that are critical to the NOAA/NWS. Your report will be directly forwarded to a forecaster.

Urgent Priority

  • Tornadoes - has touched down
  • Funnel Clouds -has not touched down
  • Rotating Wall Clouds -look for persistence
  • Flash Flooding

High Priority

  • Hail 3/4 inch or larger- report hail size to that of a coin 
  • Winds - 58 mph or greater
  • Rainfall - Amounts of 1 inch or more an hour
  • Heavy Fog - hazardous driving conditions

Low Priority

  • Hail under 1/2 inch
  • wind greater then 40 mph
  • Cloud features suggesting storm organization

Who To Notify (800 number to be used by certified SkyWarn Spotters)

If spotting any of the above in progress, notify the NWS Spotter Hot-Line at 1-800-850-5058 and your local  Public Safety Agencie(s)

Have the following information ready:

  • Skywarn Spotter ID number
  • Location: Lat /Long or GPS if known
  • Type of severe weather
  • Wind Speed if known
  • Direction Severe weather is moving

If spotter observation is after the hazard has past,do not call the Hot-line but follow up with NOAA / NWS on-line Spotter report form  ( On-Line spotter report may be used by general public )

Small trees in leaf begin to sway;
crested wavelets form on inland waters

Large branches in motion; whistling heard in telephone wires

Whole trees in motion;
inconvenience felt walking against the wind

Breaks twigs off trees;
wind generally impedes progress

Slight structural damage occurs

Large limbs knocked down, the size of an adult's wrist; powerlines knocked down; a few house shingles torn off.

A few small trees or shrubs can be uprooted;
Very large branches broken off;
Barns may sustain considerable damage.

greater than 69½

Trees may be uprooted or snapped, power poles snapped or knocked over;
large vehicles can be blown off the road.
Roofs blown off homes.
